The Difference Between Habit, Routine, and Ritual
Apr 26, 2020Did you know there was a difference?
Habits, routines, and rituals are often considered synonymous but they’re pretty dang different.
𝗛𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗧:
Requires little to no cognitive effort
You might find yourself doing it without even realizing it
Tied to some sort of situational cue and repetition of interpretation, action, and reward following it
Takes time to form (66 days on average, according to research, not 21)
Example 👉 driving to the store but ending up at the gym accidentally... 💔 #missyou
𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗘:
Conscious effort requires to initiate
Not quite an automatic behavior and is more variable
Habits can fall within your routines, but routines are not habits themselves
Example 👉 I water the plants every Sunday... not something I do without awareness that I’m doing it lol
𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗨𝗔𝗟:
Very mindful, intentional and has a specific purpose
Your actions have a specific meaning tied to them
Applying mindfulness TO a routine can make it more ritualized
Example 👉 mindful eating (you can likely see the benefits of this, opposed to eating out of habit or routine)
✏️ K now I wanna hear it! Lemme know in the comments...
