Stages of Change
Jul 14, 2020What’s great about preparing for the Health Mindset Coaching Certification is that the content can often double as an IG post 🤓
I obviously can’t teach the entire program on Instagram, and I know you’re not all coaches/health professionals… BUT the info here is good for errrrybody
If you’ve been around behavior change or psychology in the last 50 years, you’ve likely heard of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) or Stages of Change
This is a long standing “change theory” (aka explains how people make behavior changes) rather than an “explanatory theory” (aka why they change)
Reading through the slides above you might find yourself thinking: “okay yeah this process makes sense.”
But how is it actually helpful?
👉From a coaching perspective:
Understanding where your clients are at in their ✨change journey✨ is important.
How you communicate, what you recommend, the types of questions you ask, how you set up a plan, what you expect from a client allllll needs to consider their “change starting point” (and adjust as necessary)
👉From a personal perspective:
Don’t compare your contemplation stage to someone’s maintenance stage 🙅♀️
No matter where you’re at… first accept it.
Then, ask yourself: What can I do to move to the next stage?
Know what you need to do? Cool. Put your head down, and get to work; Do your best to keep from comparing your process to others.
Getting stuck in the “wow living a healthy life is just SO easy for her. She must have something I don’t…” Will lead you down the fixed mindset 🧠 path of unhappiness and un-success quick.
👉For everyone, it’s important to note:
This process is NOT linear.
On your journey to lifestyle change - you’ll likely progress, regress, relapse, etc. until you find that maintenance.
And even at maintenance, some effort is still required. And you might still find yourself second guessing - “is this worth it?” And that’s where the real mindset work comes in 😉
