Healthy Lifestyle Change Trajectory
Jun 18, 2020You’ve found a sense of hope.
Perhaps you finally made the decision that you’re going to change your eating behaviors. For real.
Maybe you hired a coach.
Or the gym is finally open again, so you’re READY TO GO.
This all feels really good.
In some cases, it might feel so good to the point that it provides a false sense of accomplishment.
⚠️ be careful not to confuse this sense of hope, for actually doin’ the damn thing. All too often people get caught up in these feelings without actually getting shit done.
^^ This “false hope syndrome” (a real thing - google scholar it) often occurs because of…
Step 2️⃣
Obstacles, setbacks, challenges, barriers, etc.
Basically all the not-so-fun stuff you fail to consider when you’re riding that beginning “hope” wave.
☝️But these things are inevitable.
Making changes to your lifestyle isn’t always smooth sailing (if it were, I wouldn’t have a PhD or a job lol)
But here’s the kicker: 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗖𝗘𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗦𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁.
Step 3️⃣:
Perception Option 🅰️
Did you learn what triggers a setback?
Did you gain some insight on how to handle future situations?
Did you learn something about yourself?
👉If so, then you likely gained some confidence and a prepared to continue towards your goals with an even higher likelihood of success than before.
Or….
Perception Option 🅱️
Did you blame yourself for “never” being able to stick with a plan?
Did you get upset and try to pretend like it didn’t happen?
Did you give up and decide you’re just not cut out for this?
👉If so, then you probably gave up (or will very soon), just to start the process over again in the future once you’ve found a new “hit of hope”
Healthy lifestyle change (and goal success in general) requires not only expecting and planning for setbacks but LEVERAGING them to learn, grow, and develop.
Doing so is ESSENTIAL for any behavior change you wish to make.
And is CRUCIAL for good coaching practices.
This is how you begin to cultivate a growth mindset 🌱
