Components of Motivational Interviewing

Jun 20, 2020

I’m a health coach, psychologist, and plant mom.⁣

Couldn’t be happier to be blending all three in one post lol⁣

If you’ve been following me for at least a few weeks, you’ve likely seen my alocasia plant (Kesha) through some tough times on IG stories.⁣

She’s been droopy and sad, but with some pruning, fertilizer, and a stake to help her stand up — she’s been thriving 💚💚⁣

And in the process, she became an analogy.⁣

Understanding the components of Motivational Interviewing is like understanding a plant⁣

(a sentence I never thought I would say, but am too excited to be saying 😂)⁣

🌱The FOUNDATION (aka the spirit of MI) resembles a proper soil & pot — the plant needs a healthy base to grow from⁣

𝗠𝗜 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation⁣

🌱The GUIDING PRINCIPLES are like the stake that Kesha needed to stand up straight & grow in the right direction⁣

𝗠𝗜 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀: resisting the urge to automatically fix or provide answers, understanding motivations to change/not change, listening with empathy, and empowering clients⁣

🌱The SKILLS are similar to what is needed to keep the plant flourishing (e.g. watering, sunshine, pruning, fertilizing)⁣

𝗠𝗜 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, normalizing, asking permission, summarizing⁣

These components 👆 are what I taught to rooms filled of health professionals… over the course of TWO DAYS.⁣

…So I truly didn’t even attempt to cover the details of each component here, but instead wanted to provide a basic understanding of MI⁣
